As part of the first assignment in Studio UNLEARN, conducted by Professor Dilan Vural, the exploration of Misfits & Hybrids presents an investigation into the boundaries of "undefined" spaces. Through written, drawn, and model-based documentation, this exercise delves into where these spaces begin and end. The goal is to sharpen the eye for the everyday, unplanned, yet essential moments that transform urban environments through unspoken needs and interactions.
This perception exercise invites a refined awareness of urban spaces, uncovering the silent dynamics that emerge at the intersection of the designed and the lived. By observing these hybrid appropriations, we cultivate an understanding of how habitual, unscripted interactions redefine and enrich our built environment. (Dilan Vural)
I. Selbstentscheidung
II. Thesis: Misfits are essential to public space development.
1. object is installed in the public space
2. people inhabit the spaces or objects
3A. object is used as intended
3B. the public utilizes it in unexpected /innovative ways
4. the public makes its needs known.
5. architects gather user input to inform future designs.
III. Example: Innovative Use of Temporary Structures.
1. There’s a construction site for a facade renovation.
2. People tie their bikes to the metal poles and use them asinformal seating areas.
3. Users demonstrate a need for more designated bike storage and seating areas
4. We should address the public’s need for more bike racks and casual seating
5. We should consider integrating bike racks and seating into future public space designs.
Scene: Informal bike parking at construction poles
